Traditional style incorporates classic design and European sensibilities. With inspiration from 18th- and 19th-century, traditional style can range from Parisian apartments to provincial homes. At its core, traditional design strives for comfort and predictability. Symmetry and order are key. Mid-tone colors and muted fabrics in classic patterns, such plaids, florals, and stripes are commonly used. These traditional elements combine to create a homey feel that's easy to live with. Below we've rounded up some of our favorite products, projects, and techniques for creating a traditional look in your home.
Traditional Colors
Traditional style can include a wide range of colors, but as a general rule you'll want to stick to calm, nature-inspired hues that are easy on the eyes. Traditional design values harmony and order, so steer clear of anything too bold or jarring. Furniture pieces should be kept fairly neutral, sticking to warm whites, greys and lots of stained woods. Incorporate stronger colors, such as reds and greens, through art, textiles and accessories. Below we've selected some of our favorite Jolie Paint colors to use in a traditional setting.
Traditional Finishes
For a traditional look, we recommend soft, layered or lightly distressed finishes using colored Jolie Finishing Wax to create a sense of patina and old world charm. The Distressed Finish, the Basic Finish, the Textured Finish, and the Dry Brushed Finish are all great choices. We particularly love layering colors to create depth and interest.
Jolie Gilding Wax or Metal Leaf can be used to add subtle embellishment, especially on mirrors, lamps and other home decor items.
You may also choose to leave some wood items unpainted and simply apply Jolie Finishing Wax in Brown to darken the wood tone.
