Jolie Paint:

WHERE IS JOLIE PAINT MADE?

Jolie Paint is proudly manufactured in the United States.

WHAT KIND OF PAINT IS JOLIE PAINT?

Jolie Paint is a water-based decorative paint with an ultra matte finish. It is 100% acrylic emulsion, containing calcium carbonate and other binders to give it exceptional adhesion properties. Jolie Paint is specifically designed to perform well with a variety of techniques. For more information on the versatility of Jolie Paint, download The Everyday Guide.

WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE I BEGIN PAINTING?

Jolie Paint adheres to most surfaces without sanding or priming. We recommend applying Jolie Paint to a clean, dry surface. Use a biodegradable cleaner to scrub the surface to be painted, then rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before painting.

Certain surfaces may require additional prep work. Continue reading these FAQs for information regarding painting paint-resistant surfaces, such as melamine or laminate, rusted surfaces, raw wood, or surfaces with loose or peeling paint.

TIP: Shellac can be used to seal up ODORS from musty or smoky furniture. Spraying shellac is an easy way to coat the interiors of large case goods.

Jolie Paint should always be shaken and thoroughly stirred prior to use.

Pour your paint into a separate container while working and clean the rim of your paint can as soon as possible. This will make it easier to properly close the can when you are done.

FOR MORE TEXTURE in your finish, you can leave your paint container open for about 30 minutes before painting. This will allow some of the water to evaporate and thicken the paint.

Jolie Paint is water-based, which means that you always have the option to THIN OUT YOUR PAINT by adding water. We recommend doing this in a separate mixing container and adding water slowly in controlled increments. Never add water directly into the can - it can contaminate the paint.

For more information on what to do before painting, download The Everyday Guide or read Project Prep: Best Practices for a Successful Paint Project.

WHAT SURFACES AND MATERIALS CAN BE PAINTED WITH JOLIE PAINT?

Jolie Paint adheres to most surfaces, including wood (raw, waxed, oil-based, lacquered and stained finishes), metal, matte plastics, brick, concrete and stone. There are, however, certain surfaces that do not accept paint and should not be painted. These include oily woods such as teak and eucalyptus, powder-coated metal, thermofoil cabinetry and furniture, kitchen and bathroom countertops, and many types of tile. When in doubt or on large projects, we always recommend testing in small areas before painting the entire piece.

For more information on painting different surfaces, check out Project Prep: Best Practices for a Successful Paint Project.

CAN JOLIE PAINT BE USED ON UNFINISHED WOOD?

Yes, Jolie Paint works beautifully over raw wood; however, some woods require additional surface prep.

Some woods contain tannins that may bleed through the paint as it dries, leaving orange or pinkish stains. OAK and MAHOGANY are the most likely offenders. To avoid bleed through, use shellac, a non-toxic sealer, to seal up any knots or wood-filled areas prior to painting. If you have already begun painting and notice stains, apply shellac, allow it to dry, and then apply an additional coat of paint.

If you are painting over raw wood, you may notice RAISED WOOD GRAIN after the first coat. To achieve a smoother finish, sand after the first coat of paint.

CAN JOLIE PAINT BE USED ON MELAMINE, LAMINATE AND OTHER NON-POROUS SURFACES?

Jolie Paint will adhere to some “paint-resistant” surfaces, such as melamine and laminate, with extra preparation. Clean the surface, sand it with fine (180-220 grit) sandpaper, and wipe away the dust. Apply one thin coat of Jolie Paint and allow it to dry for 48 hours. The curing process will begin during this time, ensuring that the paint will adhere to the surface. You can then apply the second coat of paint and proceed normally with your project.

CAN JOLIE PAINT BE USED ON FABRIC?

Jolie Paint can be used on some fabrics; however, NATURAL FABRICS and LEATHERS work best. Add up to 40% water to the paint in a separate mixing container and apply the paint in thin layers, allowing it to dry completely (preferably overnight) between coats. Sand the paint between coats to prevent it from forming a crust, which may crack when weight is applied to it. This technique is best executed on upholstery where the fabric is pulled taut. On furniture with a lot of give, you may notice cracks over time. Jolie Finishing Wax can be used to seal and protect the painted fabric.

CAN JOLIE PAINT BE USED ON A SURFACE WITH RUST OR PEELING PAINT?

If you paint over RUST, it will likely return through your finish. This may or may not be your desired look. To control the rust, sand off as much of it as possible and treat the surface with a rust inhibitor or a rusty metal primer before painting.

Always sand away any loose or PEELING PAINT before applying fresh paint over it.

CAN JOLIE PAINT BE USED OUTDOORS?

Yes, Jolie Paint is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. However, if you are using the paint for an exterior application, you should not seal your surface; you want to let moisture pass through the paint to allow it to weather naturally. After painting and before exposing your piece to the outdoor elements, allow the paint to dry overnight. You can also wipe down the surface with a damp cloth to slightly polish the finish.

CAN JOLIE PAINT BE USED ON CABINETS?

Yes, painting cabinets with Jolie Paint is a great way to transform your kitchen, bathroom, or storage spaces. However, not all types of cabinets are good candidates for painting. Before you begin, confirm what material your cabinets are made out of and how they have been previously treated or finished.

Jolie Paint will adhere to most surfaces, including OIL-BASED PAINT, LACQUER and POLYURETHANE. Very SHINY SURFACES should be lightly sanded prior to painting to promote adhesion. Most SOLID WOOD cabinets can be painted successfully. Some types of woods, such as OAK and MAHOGANY, may require a primer coat of shellac, a non-toxic sealer, to block stains that may be pulled through the wood grain.

Even though MELAMINE or LAMINATE cabinets are not usually intended to be painted, Jolie Paint will adhere to the surface with a little sanding and some patience. Jolie Paint adheres better to difficult surfaces if allowed to dry a day or two between coats.

Cabinets finished with THERMOFOIL should not be painted. Thermofoil is a thin layer of synthetic materials (paper and resin wrap that may mimic wood grain) that are heat-wrapped around a base of engineered wood. A thermofoil surface will not accept paint long-term. Some older styles of thermofoil can be peeled away and removed with the help of a heat gun. If you have doubts about the material of your cabinets, your cabinet manufacturer may be able to provide a product description.

As with any large job, do some testing in an inconspicuous place, such as the inside of a door, before proceeding with the entire project.

PREPPING YOUR CABINETS

Once you are ready to paint, begin by removing the hardware and giving the cabinets a thorough cleaning to remove any dirt or grease. This is particularly important in kitchens, as grease and oil residue leftover from cooking can prevent Jolie Paint from adhering. Use a biodegradable cleaner to scrub the surface, then rinse it thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before painting.

TIPS:

When painting cabinet doors and drawers, watch out for excess paint pooling in the corners and along the edges of raised panels. Use a small Artist Brush to clean out these areas before drying.

Allow each coat of paint to dry completely before applying the next. Between coats, inspect the surface for loose bristles, drips or unwanted texture and sand these away with a Jolie Sanding Pad before applying subsequent coats.

SEALING AND FINISHING YOUR CABINETS

Seal your newly painted cabinets with two or three coats of Jolie Finishing Wax in Clear, working in manageable sections at a time. Two thin coats is often best for the first pass. Apply the next coat after 8 hours.

On hard wearing surfaces such as kitchen cabinets, we recommend that you confine the use of darker Finishing Waxes to crevices and alongside moldings. A finish with an all-over application of darker Finishing Waxes will show more wear and tear, and will be trickier to repair or refresh over time with a new coat of Finishing Wax.

Be gentle with your cabinetry as the new finish will require at least two weeks to harden and cure. Clean your finished cabinets with a soft cloth and mild soap and water.

For more information on painting cabinets, download The Cabinet Guide and watch our video tutorial on Updating Cabinets with Jolie Paint.

CAN JOLIE PAINT BE USED ON COUNTERTOPS?

We do not recommend painting kitchen or bathroom countertops. A painted and sealed surface may be porous and could harbor bacteria that is harmful to ingest.

CAN JOLIE PAINT BE USED ON WALLS?

Yes, our original Jolie Paint formula can be used on walls and will provide a beautiful matte finish. For additional finish options and a slightly lower price point, we recommend checking out our Wall & Trim Collection.

CAN JOLIE PAINT BE USED ON A FIREPLACE?

In most cases, yes. We recommend checking your local building codes to confirm if there are any restrictions on painting near a firebox. NOTE: Jolie Topcoats are not heat-resistant and should not be used if the area being painted will experience high temperatures.

CAN JOLIE PAINT BE USED IN A PAINT SPRAYER?

Jolie Paint can be applied through a paint sprayer, but it will need to be thinned with approximately 25-30% water (check your sprayer’s requirements) prior to spraying.

HOW MUCH PAINT DO I NEED FOR MY PROJECT?

Read our helpful blog post, Calculating How Much Paint You Need for a Project, for more information.

TIP: Some colors cover better than others. Jolie reds, yellows and whites, especially Pure White, have the least amount of coverage. “Workhorse” colors with great coverage include French Grey, Uptown Ecru and Farmhouse Beige. Consider applying one of the workhorse colors before Pure White to cut down on the number of coats required.

DO YOU OFFER CUSTOM COLORS?

Yes, check out our Custom Color Program for details on how to order custom colors by the gallon or mix your own custom color at home.

CAN I COMPLETE MY PROJECT INDOORS OR SHOULD I PAINT OUTSIDE?

Jolie Paint is water-based, non-toxic, low VOC and fast-drying, so it is not necessary to complete projects outside. Jolie Paint should always be applied in ambient temperatures (55-85° F or 13-29° C). If you do choose to paint outdoors, we recommend avoiding extreme heat or cold.

HOW LONG DOES JOLIE PAINT TAKE TO DRY?

Jolie Paint dries in about 30-45 minutes or when the surface no longer feels cool to the touch. Dry time may vary depending on your climate and the thickness of application. The second coat will dry faster than the first coat, and more heavily pigmented colors (darker and/or brighter) will take longer to dry.

When freshly painted, your finish will feel quite soft. This is the best time to manipulate it with techniques such as distressing, applying Finishing Wax, etc. As the paint cures (a process which takes approximately two weeks), it becomes much harder and more difficult to manipulate. Force drying the paint with heat, such as a hairdryer, makes it dry harder.

HOW SHOULD I STORE MY PAINT?

Since Jolie Paint dries so quickly, it is best to keep as much paint as possible out of the rim of the can so that the lid can be securely replaced. Pour the paint you need into a separate container to use for painting and clean out the rim of the can as soon as possible.

Use a rubber mallet to gently pound down the lid on the can, being careful not to damage the delicate rim. A sheet of a cling wrap over the top of the closed lid will help to ensure an airtight seal.

Store your paint in a cool, dry place. Jolie Paint does not contain antifreeze and should be protected from freezing temperatures.

Jolie Finishing Wax:

WHERE IS JOLIE FINISHING WAX MADE?

Jolie Finishing Wax is imported from Europe.

WHEN SHOULD I USE JOLIE FINISHING WAX?

Jolie Finishing Wax is a non-toxic and non-yellowing wax that can be used to both protect and seal interior furniture, cabinets, and home accessories. Use it on pieces that have been painted with Jolie Paint, raw or stained wood, or other painted finishes. Jolie Finishing Wax should be used on interior projects only. Do not use any other kind of protective coat after you have applied Jolie Finishing Wax.

For more information, check out Tips for Waxing Your Project.

HOW MUCH WAX DO I NEED FOR MY PROJECT?

Jolie Finishing Wax is available in two sizes: 500 ml and 120 ml. One 500 ml can covers approximately the same surface area as 2-3 quarts of Jolie Paint. Actual coverage will vary depending on the thickness of the application. Make sure to save a small amount of Finishing Wax for occasional touch ups. Recommended amounts for colored Finishing Waxes vary based on technique and desired level of color embellishment over Jolie Paint.

HOW DO I APPLY JOLIE FINISHING WAX?

Before applying Jolie Finishing Wax, ensure that your paint is completely dry and no longer feels cool to the touch. It’s best to apply Finishing Wax in an ambient working temperature of 55-85° F (13-29° C).

In most cases and particularly over lighter paint colors, you should first apply a coat of Clear Finishing Wax to your surface to seal the paint. This will give you more control if you choose to apply a more heavily-pigmented colored Finishing Wax, such as Brown or Black, which could otherwise stain the paint. Because White Finishing Wax does not contain as much pigment, it can be applied directly to the paint in the same manner as Clear Finishing Wax to slightly soften the color. White Finishing Wax will gather in any texture or crevices and bring out the grain.

Use a Jolie Wax Brush to apply Clear Finishing Wax in workable areas of approximately 2-3 square feet at a time or on a section such as a drawer front, side panel, etc. Use a gentle sweeping motion to work the Clear Finishing Wax into the paint. Work in every direction, just as you did with your paint brushstrokes. You will notice that the wax will slightly darken the underlying color and make it richer.

Use a clean, absorbent, lint-free cloth to remove the excess wax. Use gentle pressure and be sure to keep turning the cloth to a clean spot so that it can continue to remove the excess wax rather than simply move it around on your surface. Once the cloth becomes saturated with wax, you will need to replace it with a fresh cloth. Do not press too hard or “scrub” the surface with the cloth; instead, allow the paint to absorb the amount of wax that it needs and gently remove the excess.

Move on to an adjacent area and continue to apply the Clear Finishing Wax in the same manner.

After waxing and wiping individual sections, go back to any large areas and apply another thin coat of Finishing Wax from end to end and wipe it back in the same manner to prevent any stop and start marks. On surfaces that may need added protection, such as table tops or cabinets, wait at least 8 hours before applying a second thin coat of Clear Finishing Wax.

For more information on using Jolie Finishing Waxes, download The Everyday Guide or read our Tips for Waxing Your Project.

HOW DO I USE THE COLORED FINISHING WAXES?

Jolie Finishing Wax not only protects your painted surfaces or raw woods, but is also available in a variety of colors to assist in creating character and depth in your finish. For full instructions on how to use Colored Finishing Wax, download the Jolie Embellishment Guide or read How to Use Colored Finishing Wax.

CAN I USE JOLIE FINISHING WAX OUTSIDE?

No, Jolie Finishing Wax is for INTERIOR USE ONLY. If you are using Jolie Paint for an exterior application, do not seal your surface; you want to let moisture pass through the paint to allow it to weather naturally. After painting and before exposing your piece to the outdoor elements, allow the paint to dry overnight, then wipe down the surface with a damp cloth to slightly polish the finish.

CAN I USE THE FINISHING WAX OVER UNPAINTED SURFACES, SUCH AS UNFINISHED OR STAINED WOOD?

Yes, Jolie Finishing Wax can be applied to unpainted wood surfaces.

CAN I USE JOLIE FINISHING WAX OVER OTHER PAINTS (I.E. LATEX, OIL-BASED)?

Yes, Jolie Finishing Waxes can be applied over other paint products. We always recommend doing a test spot before beginning your project.

CAN I APPLY PAINT OVER JOLIE FINISHING WAX?

Jolie Paint can be applied directly over Jolie Finishing Wax; however, other paints and topcoats may not adhere to Jolie Finishing Wax. Use mineral spirits to remove the wax or paint over it with another coat of Jolie Paint if you want to apply another product.

CAN I APPLY OTHER TOPCOAT PRODUCTS OVER JOLIE FINISHING WAX?

Once you have applied Jolie Finishing Wax to a surface, it cannot be top coated with any product other than Jolie Paint. Use mineral spirits to remove the wax or paint over it with another coat of Jolie Paint if you want to apply another product.

WILL JOLIE FINISHING WAX ADD SHINE TO MY FINISH?

Jolie Finishing Wax naturally has a matte finish, but it can be buffed with a lint-free cloth to bring out some shine 30 minutes to two hours after application. The wax should be completely dry and no longer feel cool to the touch before buffing. A cloth with a bit of “tooth,” a horsehair buffing brush, or even a bit of very fine grit sandpaper will bring out even more shine. Buffing too soon will result in an uneven shine.

If you would like your finish to have a higher sheen, we recommend using Jolie Varnish, which is available in Gloss and Low-Luster.

I'M USING JOLIE PAINT ON MY WALLS. CAN I SEAL THEM WITH JOLIE FINISHING WAX?

Yes, Jolie Finishing Wax can be used on walls. However, keep in mind that if you wax your walls with Finishing Wax, you will not be able to repaint with any product other than Jolie Paint.

HOW LONG DOES JOLIE FINISHING WAX TAKE TO DRY?

Jolie Finishing Wax dries quickly in 1-2 hours, and fully cures in approximately two weeks. Warmer and dryer conditions will shorten the curing time, while colder and more humid conditions may extend it. Be gentle with your pieces during that time.

HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR MY WAXED FINISH?

When caring for waxed pieces, dust with a soft cloth and clean if needed with a bit of gentle soap on a damp rag. Rinse well. Don’t use degreasing soaps or furniture polish on a waxed finish. To refresh a “tired” finish that can no longer be buffed to a shine, apply a quick coat of Clear Finishing Wax.

Once you have applied Jolie Finishing Wax to a surface, it cannot be top coated with any product other than Jolie Paint. Use mineral spirits to remove the wax or paint over it with another coat of Jolie Paint if you want to apply another product.

CAN I REPAIR OR TOUCH-UP MY WAXED FINISH?

To give your piece a quick refresh and improve its sheen, you may add an additional light coat of Finishing Wax at any point. If your finish becomes scratched, stained, or blemished, as can happen to any protective coating, utilize the remedying properties of Clear Finishing Wax by working it into the affected area and wiping away the excess. Be sure to allow the ample time for drying and curing.

Jolie Varnish:

WHEN SHOULD I USE JOLIE VARNISH?

Jolie Varnish is a clear, water-based acrylic topcoat that creates a long-lasting finish on furniture and cabinetry. An easy to use alternative to Finishing Wax, Jolie Varnish is available in two different sheen levels: Gloss and Low-Luster. Use this non-yellowing topcoat over Jolie Paint, stained, or raw wood.

Note: Jolie Varnish is not suitable for floors, unprotected exteriors surfaces, waxed surfaces, or food-prep surfaces, such as counter tops.

For more information on working with Jolie Varnish, read How to Use Jolie Varnish.

CAN I APPLY VARNISH OVER JOLIE FINISHING WAX?

Jolie Varnish can not be applied over Jolie Finishing Wax. If you wish to apply Varnish to a surface that has been waxed, we recommend repainting with Jolie Paint and resealing with Varnish.

If you do not wish to repaint, you can also remove the Finishing Wax using mineral spirits. Just be sure to clean the surface well before applying Varnish.

HOW MUCH JOLIE VARNISH DO I NEED FOR MY PROJECT?

Jolie Varnish is currently sold in 8oz jars, quarts and gallons (special order). One 8oz (236.6ml) covers approximately 20-30 square feet (1.9-2.8 square meters). One quart (946ml) covers approximately 100-125 square feet (9.3-11.6 square meters). One gallon (3.79 liters) covers approximately 450 square feet (41.8 square meters). Actual coverage may vary depending on surface and application.

HOW DO I APPLY JOLIE VARNISH?

Before beginning, ensure that your surface is clean, dry, and free of all contaminants. Raw wood should be sanded smooth and dusted.

Gently shake your can of Jolie Varnish, then open and stir well to mix in any solids that may have settled at the bottom of the can. Always use Jolie Varnish at full strength - never dilute with water.

Note: Jolie Varnish is not suitable for floors, unprotected exteriors surfaces, waxed surfaces, or food-prep surfaces, such as counter tops.

If you are planning to apply Varnish over a painted wood surface, particularly oak, pine, or other open-grained woods, we strongly recommend that you test several areas in various locations with Jolie Paint and Jolie Varnish before getting started.

Jolie Varnish is a strong, penetrating varnish that drills down through the paint for the most durability. As it dries, Jolie Varnish has been known to pull tannins through the paint, resulting in pink or orange stains. Should this occur, the only recourse is to seal and repaint the surface. If you see any evidence of tannin bleed-through in the patches, seal the entire floor with two thin coats of shellac prior to applying any paint.

Apply a liberal first coat of Jolie Varnish with a synthetic bristle brush, such as a Jolie Flat Brush, being careful to avoid overworking with pressure or excessive back brushing. Varnish can also be applied using an airless sprayer. Use the following recommendations and/or the instructions from your sprayer’s manufacturer.

Tip: .011”-.013”

Fan: 40°-60° (8”-12”)

Pressure: 1200-1600 psi

PRO TIP: For larger areas, use a roller to apply Jolie Varnish and brush it out with a Flat Brush. This will give you a more even application and keep you from overworking the finish.

After applying your first coat, allow the Varnish to dry for 4-6 hours.

Always close Varnish container after each use and wash brushes thoroughly with soap and warm water immediately after use.

After the Varnish has dried, sand between coats with a fine Jolie Sanding Pad (grey) for the smoothest finish.

Repeat steps one through three to apply 1-2 additional coats of Jolie Varnish, making sure to allow each coat to dry for 4-6 hours. Be gentle with the final finish for two days so that the curing process can begin. Jolie Varnish will take up to 30 days to fully cure and harden.

To maintain your finish, clean surface with mild soapy water and avoid harsh chemicals.

For more information on working with Jolie Varnish, read How to Use Jolie Varnish.

CAN I USE JOLIE VARNISH OUTSIDE?

Jolie Varnish should be used on protected exterior surfaces only.

IS JOLIE VARNISH WATER PROOF?

Jolie Varnish is water-resistant, but not water-proof. We recommend cleaning up spills promptly and avoiding use in areas that will be exposed to a lot of water.

Jolie Embellishment Products:

HOW DO I USE JOLIE GILDING WAXES?

Jolie Gilding Wax is an easy way to give metallic highlights to carvings, appliqués, or hardware. Consider using it to add some reflection to your matte, painted finish, especially on surfaces that were originally metal. Jolie Gilding Waxes can be applied with a brush or a fingertip to add metallic shine to details. Apply Clear Finishing Wax to your surface first for the most control.

For complete instructions on how to use Gilding Wax, download the Jolie Embellishment Guide or watch our video tutorial on How to Embellish with Jolie Waxes.

HOW DO I USE JOLIE GOLD SIZE AND METAL LEAF?

Apply a thin, even coat of Gold Size with an artist brush to the areas to be covered with Jolie Metal Leaf. The size will go on white and dry clear. It should be ready to accept the metal leaf after 10-20 minutes of dry time and will remain tacky indefinitely. On a porous surface, apply a second coat of size after about 15 minutes. Wash your brush in hot soapy water as soon as possible. If you are gilding over a piece painted with Jolie Paint, make sure to apply your Gold Size and Metal Leaf before the Jolie Finishing Wax as the Gold Size will not stick to already waxed surfaces.

Jolie Metal Leaf comes in three colors: Gold, silver and copper. Gently apply the Jolie Metal Leaf over the sized areas, using a soft, dry brush to push the leaf onto the surface. Continue until all the areas where you applied Gold Size have been covered with Metal Leaf.

Use a soft brush to remove any loose, excess leaf, being careful not to scratch the surface of the leaf. Use a soft cloth to help remove any last little pieces.

Apply Clear Finishing Wax to seal and protect the Metal Leaf. If you are using a water-based topcoat instead of Finishing Wax, apply a coat of shellac before your topcoat.

Gold Size and Metal Leaf are intended for interior use only.

For complete instructions on how to use Gold Size and Metal Leaf, download the Jolie Embellishment Guide or watch our video tutorial on How to Apply Jolie Gold Size and Metal Leaf to Furniture.

HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR MY BRUSHES?

Clean brushes with warm water and a grease-cutting detergent and hang or prop to dry with the bristles pointing downward. With proper care, these brushes should last for years.

Jolie Wall & Trim Paint:

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WALL & TRIM PAINT AND JOLIE PAINT

The Wall & Trim Collection was designed to complement the Jolie Paint range, offering an alternative paint option for projects where Jolie Paint may not be a practical choice. The Wall & Trim Collection is formulated specifically for use on interior walls, millwork and masonry surfaces. It’s a lower price point than Jolie Paint, making it a great choice for large scale projects requiring a simple color change. Unlike our original Jolie Paint formula, which has a chalky, matte finish, the Wall & Trim collection is available in three finish options: Flat, Eggshell and Semi-Gloss.

The Wall & Trim color range differs from that of Jolie Paint, offering 24 colors vs. Jolie Paint’s 42, although all of our paint formulas can be ordered in custom colors.

Key Differences:

  • Price point per gallon:

    • Jolie Paint: $131.95

    • Wall & Trim: Starting at $55.95

  • Available Sizes

    • Jolie Paint: 4oz samples, pints, quarts, gallons

    • Wall & Trim: gallons, 5-gallons (special order only)

  • Finish Options

    • Jolie Paint: Ultra-Matte

    • Wall & Trim: Flat, Eggshell, Semi-Gloss

  • Required surface prep

    • Jolie Paint: requires little to no prep on most surfaces

    • Wall & Trim: requires a primer on new drywall and raw wood

  • Complementary Products

    • Jolie Paint: designed to work with Jolie topcoats & embellishment products

    • Wall & Trim: no topcoat required

  • Environmental rating

    • Jolie Paint: Green Wise Certified (ultra-low VOC)

    • Wall & Trim: Low VOC

  • Color Options

    • Jolie Paint: 42 pre-tinted colors with custom color services available

    • Wall & Trim: 24 colors with custom color services available

CAN I USE WALL & TRIM PAINT ON FURNITURE?

Our Jolie Paint formula is still our go-to for furniture since it’s versatility and ease of use really can’t be beat. However, Wall & Trim Paint could be a good option for certain projects where you’re just looking for a simple color change. Keep in mind you will need to use Jolie Primer on new drywall or raw woods, so there would be a bit of extra prep. It’s quite durable, especially if using our semi-gloss finish, so a topcoat isn’t necessarily required, but if you did want to use one, Jolie Varnish would be your best choice.

CAN I USE WALL & TRIM PAINT ON FLOORS?

All Jolie paints can be applied to floors after appropriate prep work based on the specific surface and needs to be topped with Jolie Floor Varnish or similar floor-rated topcoat.

IS WALL & TRIM PAINT LOW VOC?

Our Wall & Trim Collection is low-VOC (under 50g/l) and suitable for all interiors, including family spaces and childrens’ rooms. For comparison, our original Jolie Paint formula is ultra-low VOC (under 4g/l), making it almost no VOC.

DO I NEED TO USE A PRIMER WITH WALL & TRIM PAINT?

We recommend using Jolie Primer in the following scenarios:

·     If surface is porous or has not been previously painted

·     If surface has been repaired or patched

·     If surface is stained or water damaged

·     If switching paint color from dark to light

·     If surface is glossy or shiny

HOW DURABLE IS WALL & TRIM PAINT?

All three of our Wall & Trim Paint finishes are washable and scrubbable, making them a great choice for high traffic areas. However, the higher the sheen, the greater the durability, making Semi-Gloss our most hard-wearing finish. See below details about the different recommended uses for each finish:

FLAT: Recommended for use on interior walls and ceilings throughout the home. Its soft, matte finish makes it ideal for concealing surface imperfections.

EGGSHELL: Our go-to paint for interior walls, this finish is great for high traffic areas. It has a subtle sheen that provides added durability and is both wipeable and washable.

SEMI-GLOSS: Our most durable finish. Use on interior trim, doors and millwork. It's also perfect for walls where a little more glamour and higher sheen are desired.

WHY DOES THE WALL & TRIM COLLECTION HAVE DIFFERENT COLORS THAN THE ORIGINAL JOLIE PAINT COLOR RANGE?

Wall color is the most dominant color in a space and needs to be selected with more discernment than an accent color on a piece of furniture or an accessory. The Wall and Trim color collection was expertly designed by our founder to be a failsafe palette that is perfect for larger scale projects. The Wall & Trim Collection does include ten colors that are also available in our pre-tinted Jolie Paint line – these include our top selling whites, blacks, grays, and chromatic neutrals.

CAN I ORDER  ____  JOLIE PAINT COLOR IN THE WALL & TRIM PAINT FORMULA?

Yes! We are working on adding this as an option on our website. In the meantime, please email info@joliehome.com with your order request, and we’ll send you a link to complete payment through our website. The same goes for ordering Wall & Trim colors in the Jolie Paint formula. All custom colors are available by the gallon only.

I’M WORKING ON A LARGE PROJECT. DO YOU OFFER CONTAINERS LARGER THAN A GALLON?

Yes, we offer 5-gallon containers of Wall & Trim Paint and Primer by special order. Email info@joliehome.com for details.

Troubleshooting:

JOLIE PAINT

PAINT SEPARATING ON SURFACE

At times, Jolie Paint may have trouble adhering to a surface, and will immediately separate into a web-like pattern when applied. This can happen when painting non-porous, paint-resistant surfaces, or surfaces that have been cleaned with furniture polishes containing silicone. NOTE: This will also happen when applying paint to Thermofoil or some engineered wood. We do not recommend painting thermofoil, as this surface will not accept paint long-term.

THE SOLUTION: Clean the surface, sand it with fine (180-220 grit) sandpaper, and wipe away the dust. Apply one thin coat of Jolie Paint and allow it to dry for 48 hours. The curing process will begin during this time, making it easier for the next coat of paint to adhere to the surface. You can then apply the second coat of paint and proceed normally with your project.

STAINS AFTER PAINTING

Stains can show up as the paint dries as orange or pinkish spots. This is usually caused by tannins that are bleeding out of an open-grained wood into the fresh paint. Oak and mahogany are the most likely offenders. Stains can also be caused by oils bleeding out of wood filler or previous oily spills.

THE SOLUTION: Wipe on one or two thin coats of shellac, a non-toxic sealer found in most hardware and paint stores. The easiest way to apply shellac is to dip a cloth into the can of shellac and wipe it across the stained areas. Be sure to wear gloves! Because shellac has a relatively short shelf life and is ruined if it is exposed to warm temperatures, using a fresh can will be the most effective. After the shellac dries (in a matter of minutes), you can then repaint the area with Jolie Paint. If you use a brush to apply shellac, clean it with either denatured alcohol or ammonia.

TIP: Do not sand mahogany furniture prior to painting. This will remove the existing topcoat which can encourage bleed through.

CRACKS IN FINISH

Cracking can occur for a number of different reasons: if the paint was applied too thickly and caused uneven surface expansion or contraction, if you paint a second coat or expose the surface to moisture before the first coat is completely dry, if the surface is exposed to a heat source such as strong sunshine or warm air from a hair dryer or heat vent (seen most often on lighter colors), if harsh cleaners, such as trisodium phosphate, were used and not rinsed appropriately, if the surface was previously cleaned with a spray furniture polish containing silicone, or if the surface was sealed with shellac that was applied too thickly or was past its shelf life.

THE SOLUTION: Lightly sand the affected areas with medium grit sandpaper and apply a coat or two of fresh shellac. Re-apply Jolie Paint.

SMELLY OR MOLDY PAINT

Smelly or moldy paint is usually caused by contaminants found in water. Never add water directly to a can of paint. Even a brush that’s wet with water can contaminate a can of paint.

THE SOLUTION: It’s best to decant the paint into another container to use while painting.

RUSTY CANS

Hammering a lid onto the can too hard can damage the epoxy liner inside the can and expose the metal, which then rusts.

THE SOLUTION: Be diligent about cleaning out the rim of the paint can and use a rubber mallet to gently replace the lid.

DRIED OUT PAINT

Failing to create an airtight seal on the paint after use can lead to dried out paint.

THE SOLUTION: Covering up the top of the can with cling wrap is an easy way to create an airtight seal, particularly when the seal has been compromised by dried paint in the rim of the can.

PAINT WITH COTTAGE CHEESE CONSISTENCY

This is usually caused by the paint freezing and thawing.

THE SOLUTION: Always store the paint in a temperature controlled environment.

JOLIE FINISHING WAX

DRIED OUT FINISHING WAX

Dried out Finishing Wax can be the result of not securing the lid tightly onto the can.

THE SOLUTION: A few drops of mineral spirits can rejuvenate the wax and restore the creamy consistency.

SPLOTCHY CLEAR FINISHING WAX

When Clear Finishing Wax is not applied evenly, it may appear splotchy on your surface.

THE SOLUTION: Try applying another coat of Clear Finishing Wax to even it out.

FINGERPRINTS

If you see fingerprints in the waxed surface, it signals that the wax was handled while it was still wet or there is too much wax on the surface.

THE SOLUTION: Buff the surface with a textured cloth or some steel wool to remove the excess.

COLOR ON THE WAX BRUSH OR CLOTH

It is not unusual to see some color on the Wax Brush or wiping cloth when waxing over highly pigmented colors, particularly when the paint is fresh.

THE SOLUTION: This will become less apparent as the paint cures and hardens. Be sure to allow for adequate cure time when using these types of highly pigmented colors, especially on chair seats, to ensure that the color doesn’t transfer onto clothing.
